Animation Magazine Pitch Party

Today Animation Magazine announced the winners of their 2010 Pitch Party Contest. My submission, Wolf Whiskers, came in first place in the online readers poll and second place in the staff picks. Unfortunately I did not place with the panel of judges, but I am still very happy with the results. Hopefully this will lead to future adventures with Wolfie in the wilderness, only time will tell. Thanks again to everyone who voted.

To Stretch a Thief - Character Designs

Here are my final character designs for the characters in my story To Stretch a Thief. Claude, the thief, has super stretching powers that he uses to steal the cat idol from the museum. He has to contend with Herbert, the neurotic guard, who maintains order whilst driving the museum halls in his trusty scooter.

The past two semesters at Academy of Art University I have been working on a story called To Stretch a Thief. It focuses on an obsessive museum guard's attempt to stop an overconfident super thief from stealing a valuable idol. I had already made a maquette for the thief, Claude, but I wanted to make a maquette for the guard, Herbert. They both make wonderful companion pieces, even if they don't seem to get along!

My first class at Academy of Art University was Figurative Concepts. The class explored the various techniques of drawing the human form, and one of the assignments required me to draw a figure standing. I was actually quite happy with how it turned out.

Clothed Figure Drawing - Folds in Motion

One assignment that I had for my Clothed Figure Drawing class at Academy of Art University last year was to draw a figure in motion. I had to pay great attention to the folds on the person's clothing, making sure that the folds I was drawing were correctly identified. This was a very good exercise for understanding how folds react to the movement of clothing on the body.

Drawing from Imagination - Perspective

Last year at Academy of Art University I took a class called Drawing from Imagination. The class covered the many principles of perspective and it focused on how to use them in layout design. For one of the assignments, I was required to do a three-point perspective layout of a topic of my choice. I decided that it would be fun to do a layout for a mini golf course. I'd love to see what the rest of Bayou Golf looks like!

Character Design - Fantasy Animal

Another assignment that I did for my Character Design class at Academy of Art University was a turnaround of a fantasy animal of my own creation. Students were encouraged to create a 'hybrid' creature using the anatomy of existing animals. I mixed the anatomy of a rhinoceros, a snapping turtle, and a chameleon to create the elusive Rhino-turtle!

Visual Elements of Story - Character Designs

For my first semester at Academy of Art University, I took a class called Visual Elements of Story. The final project involved taking a known IP, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and putting our own spin on it to create our own unique character designs. It was a very good exercise in design, and it helped to introduce me to the visual development process.

Character Design - Maquette

For my Character Design class at Academy of Art University, the final project consisted of designing a character and rendering it as a three-dimensional maquette. I came up with the idea of creating a super-powered thief, named Claude, who had the ability to stretch his limbs in any direction. This is the final maquette and I have to say that I am very happy with how it turned out. I can't wait to create another one!
